Bila Muuji – Oral Health Workshop

Bila Muuji Health Service Incorporated conducted an Oral Health workshop on 23rd and 24th November 2011 for the Health Workers from the Bila Muuji regions. Suman Kavooru, the Bila Muuji Oral Health Promotional Co-ordinator organized the event and Grace Toomey, a Wiradjuri Elder, opened proceedings with a ‘Welcome to Country ‘.

The purpose of the workshop was to:

update the Bila Muuji oral health plan
discuss the challenges and solutions in delivering oral health promotion in the region
provide updated general oral health knowledge
provide relevant information for those who are interested in advancing their career in oral health activities
to discuss how to develop appropriate oral health promotion resources for Bila Muuji.

Bila Muuji is made up of ten Aboriginal Health Services and of these Orange, Wellington, Bourke, Coonamble, Walgett, Brewarrina, Dareton and Dubbo attended.

Representatives from various organizations who addressed the meeting were:

Definitive actions to result from the workshop:

Health workers to take the lead in conducting oral health promotion
Support for Bila Muuji to develop a fluoride varnish training program with training from the AHC
Development of protocols for the school brushing program
Bila Muuji newsletter – every three months
Collaborating with other staff and program coordinators – home visits with midwives and other staff
Educating the parents
Staff training in Lift the Lip program.

Closing the Gap in Oral Health @ CSU

As she prepares for her final undergraduate year at Charles Sturt University (CSU), Ms Stacey Webb is broadening her knowledge of how her studies in oral health will help to close the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy/Hygiene) student recently completed a western NSW road trip to get an overview of the work of local Aboriginal Medical Services. She visited Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) in Wellington, Orange, Coonamble, Walgett, Brewarrina and Bourke….

New Regional Oral Health Promotions Co-ordinator

Introducing Kay Jackson

Bila Muuji is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Kay Jackson to the position of Regional Oral Health Promotion Coordinator.

Kay will be based in Dubbo and will work with the communities and organisations in the Bila Muuji sector to implement dental prevention and education programs targeted at Aboriginal people.

The Coordinator position is supported through a partnership with the Greater Western Area Health Service, so Kay will work closely with both Aboriginal communities and staff of GWAHS.

Kay describes herself as “a New Zealand Dental Therapist of indigenous decent” who “has a passion for Oral Health promotion”. She “would like to take the opportunity to share, and to learn more from the indigenous nation in your region, and assist in developing culturally appropriate Oral health programmes that will improve the health of its people.”

Bila Muuji welcome Kay to north-western New South Wales and trust she enjoys her time working in our communities
