Meet Jenny

Aboriginal Eye Health Worker

Jenny

Jenny started her journey at WAMS in 2006 as a cleaner before being asked to join the eye program two years later. She accepted the position and has now been in the role for 10 years. Jenny’s main duties include setting up clinics and ensuring people attend their appointments.

“Every day I prepare for my clinics with our optometrist, and then I go out and about to chase people up to make sure they attend the clinic. I really enjoy doing this. If I can’t contact them by phone, I visit them in person. They know what I want from them when I’m knocking on their door!”

One of the things that Jenny loves most about her job is the satisfaction she gets from helping people. She loves the feeling of assisting individuals with their sight, which allows them to live a more fulfilled life.

“I find it rewarding when I deliver their glasses to them. When they try their glasses on for the first time, it’s great to see. I feel happy because I helped them with that. I feel proud I have helped them and they can see the difference. It is really good to see the smile on their face.”

Jenny believes new starters at WAMS should be team players.

“Just communicate, have a laugh. If you have any problems, just ask me! That is what I normally say. That is what we are about here. We all chip in and help each other.”

Jenny loves living in Walgett and working at WAMS and said there’s no place she’d rather be. She enjoys the community feel in Walgett and of course, the people.

“We all know each other because it is a small town. Walgett is a very friendly place, and I would never leave. I call it the best little town in Australia. The people I work with are wonderful. I love Walgett!”

Jenny raised her four children in Walgett and now has two of her granddaughters living with her and going to the local school. On weekends, Jenny enjoys tidying the house and spending time with her granddaughters.

“My granddaughters go to school here and we have our routine and they love it. I get them involved in sport. I don’t want them on computers. I take them to netball and they go to Little Athletics, which lasts for about three months and I also take them to swimming lessons. They love it.”
